BCIC Award for Dr. Brad Buckham
October 19. MECH faculty member, Dr. Brad Buckham shares the BCIC Entrepreneurship Fellow for 2009 with tech entrepreneur and academic Gerri Sinclair. The award recognizes a permanent faculty member at a BC postsecondary institution who is a leader in technology innovation and commercialization in British Columbia. It includes $20,000 to be used for entrepreneurship education and/or commercialization initiatives at the University of Victoria. Another Prestigious Award for MECH Faculty Member
October 13, 2009. Dr. Sadik Dost has received the 2009 University of Victoria Legacy Awards for Research. The award honours recipients "whose energy and dedication have contributed significantly to the quality and reputation of the University of Victoria." Dr. Dost has been with the Department since 1989 and is the founding director of the Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technology and the Canada Research Chair in Semiconductor Crystal Growth. AUVic Succeeds in San Diego

eco EcoCAR Team Wins Top Awards
June 16, 2009. UVic EcoCAR team wins seven awards among 17 North American University teams at the first-year competition, including 2nd place overall. The NeXt Challenge is a three-year competition in which selected university teams from the US and Canada design and integrate leading-edge technology into a 2009 Saturn VUE, to reduce the environmental impact of the vehicle while maintaining utility and user appeal. The EcoCAR faculty advisors are mechanical engineeers, Dr. Z. Dong and Dr. C. Crawford. More....

New Research Collaboration Makes Waves
June 4, 2009. Dr. Brad Buckham, a UVic mechanical engineer is the primary investigator for the West Coast Wave Collaboration project (WCWCP), a network of researchers, engineers, entrepreneurs and computer modeling experts who will use wind, wave and tidal current data collected from a buoy near Ucluelet, to analyse wave energy potential off western Vancouver Island. The two-year project is co-funded by the Government of Canada and private industry to the sum of over $200k. To quote Dr. Buckham; "The modeling expertise developed through the WCWCP will advance potential wave energy projects in BC, and contribute to the development of future sites for the Canadian wave energy industry." Craigdarroch Gold Medal for Career Achievement in Research
April 6, 2009. Dr. Sadik Dost has been named as the recepient of the Craigdarroch Gold Medal for Career Achievement in Research. From watches and cell phones to supercomputers and solar panels, almost all electronic devices rely on the semiconducting properties of single crystal materials. Sadik Dost is an international leader in crystal growth, the processes used to produce these materials.

Best TA Award
April 1, 2009. Adel Younis, a Ph.D. candidate in the department, was presented the Best Teaching Assistance Award of 2008. The department presents an Excellent Teaching Assistance Award each term and a Best Teaching Assistance Award every year, based on the evaluations and feedbacks from our students. Mr. Younis was ranked consistently at the top over two terms. His professional and dedicated services won him this well deserved award. The department appreciates the services and contributions made by all teaching assistants over the past year..

NSERC Award Goes to Mech Students
March 22, 2009. The NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award for the summer of 2009, has been awarded to Mechanical Engineering students, Michael Lewis and Francesco Silletta. Congratulations!

UVic Engineering Spearheading a Tech Park Study
July 18, 2008. A $330,000 study will create a business and master plan for the Pacific Centre for Ocean Energy and Engineering at UVic's current Marine Technology Center. The Center will house up to three wave tanks, each measuring 30,000 square feet. Dr. Brad Buckham, of the Dept of Mechanical engineering considers the tanks to be a key part of the site that will make ocean energy solutions a reality. More...

UVic Engineering Team for Elite Eco-CAR - the "Next Challenge" Competition
May 21, 2008. A team of University of Victoria Engineering students led by Dr. Zuomin Dong, Chair of Mech Eng., and Jeremy Wise, Mech student, was selected to participate in the elite Eco-CAR Challenge Competition, sponsored by US Department of Energy, General Motors corp., Natural Resources Canada, Argonne National Lab. and many other leading companies in automotive industry, software modeling, instrumentation, etc. Media Release.....
